Rockwood On Ground (Semi-InGround) Pool Kits: A Smart “In-Ground Look” for Sloped Yards
Rockwood On Ground (Semi-InGround) Pool Kits: A Smart “In-Ground Look” for Sloped Yards

If your yard isn’t perfectly flat (or you want the “built-in” look without committing to a full gunite build), on-ground (semi-inground) pool kits are one of the most practical sweet spots. They’re designed so the pool can be installed partially in the ground, fully in the ground, or (for certain shapes) above grade—then finished off with decking, retaining walls, and landscaping for a true backyard-resort feel.

On-ground (semi-inground) pools are ideal for yards with slope.

What makes Rockwood kits different?

Rockwood is engineered specifically for on-ground (semi-inground) installs (not “an above-ground pool that we hope survives being buried”). Across the Rockwood lineup, you’ll see durable steel wall panels, integrated coping/liner track construction, and a wide range of shapes and sizes.

  • Polymer coping with integral liner track
  • 14-gauge steel panels
  • Z700/G235 galvanized coating
  • 20 or 27 mil liners included (kit dependent)
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • Complete pool package kits (not just walls)
    • Packages can be customized upon request

Semi-inground basics: why homeowners choose this style

  • Great for sloped yards (install into the grade instead of fighting it)
  • Deck-level entry options for a “built-in” look & feel
  • Ideal for creative finishes: decks, retaining walls, and landscaping

Shapes & install rules that matter (before you buy)

1) Concrete footer requirements vary by shape

  • Round: typically does not require a concrete footer
  • Oval: typically requires a concrete footer along the straight sides
  • Keyhole / Kidney: typically require a footer along the long/structural sections of the wall

2) Minimum “in-ground” depth (most shapes)

For many on-ground pool shapes, the walls must be installed in the ground at a minimum depth (commonly 18 inches).Plan the yard work and drainage accordingly.

What’s included in a Rockwood “complete pool package”?

Rockwood kits are sold as complete pool package kits. Exact contents vary by size/shape and step option, but typically include:

  • Pool wall/panel subassembly and hardware
    • Some kits are packaged with a set of integral walk-in steps
  • Custom-fit vinyl liner
  • Filter/pump equipment package
  • Core in-pool components (skimmer, returns, main drains, etc.)
  • Entry hardware (ladder or optional walk-in step on “with step” kits)

Tip: Open the “Items Included in the Package” section on the exact kit page you’re buying to confirm every included component.

Build planning checklist (prevents 80% of headaches)

  • Delivery access: kits arrive on one or more pallets and are assembled from wall panels.
  • Level tolerance: plan tools (laser level recommended) and time to dial in wall elevations.
  • Backfill plan: stone/gravel backfill is commonly preferred over dirt or sand.
  • Plumbing spec: use Schedule 40 rigid PVC for pool circulation plumbing.
  • Permitting: check local requirements before excavation and electrical work.
