If you want a “true” inground pool experience (steel wall structure + vinyl liner + real equipment pad) without being locked into a builder-only model, the Latham Rectangle Inground Pool Kit packages with a white thermoplastic step are designed to be DIY-friendly, configurable, and supported by ProPools before/during/after the build.
Quick take
- Best for: families who want a classic rectangle layout, lap-friendly geometry, and a highly serviceable vinyl-liner inground pool.
- Big advantages: customizable size/depth + your choice of liner pattern + step entry included.
- Key decision points: pool footprint, corner radius, depth profile, equipment options, and backyard access for excavation.
What you’re buying (in plain English)
These are complete inground pool kit packages built around a steel wall vinyl-liner pool structure, configured by ProPools with “standard” equipment and a depth profile that can typically range from shallow to deep depending on pool length (and can be customized).
The steel wall structure is engineered for rigidity and long service life, while the vinyl liner gives you comfort underfoot and a wide range of patterns. ProPools does not standardize a liner pattern for these kits—because your backyard aesthetic should drive that choice. We'll supply all available liner patterns at any time either after the pool kit is purchased and/or it's specifically requested.
Common kit sizes (with corner-radius options)
Rectangle kits are offered in multiple footprints, and many sizes can be customized by 1' increments up/down depending on the package. Your corner radius(tight vs. rounded) impacts the look, swim feel, and liner spec.
How to choose your corner radius
- 6" radius: the “true rectangle” look—crisp corners, maximum swim lane feel.
- 2' radius: slightly softened corners—clean look without feeling “rounded.” (Most Popular)
- 4' radius: the softest rectangle look—great when you want a more relaxed aesthetic and gentle lines.

Why the white thermoplastic step is a big deal
Entry systems matter. A well-designed step improves safety, comfort, and day-to-day usability. Latham’s thermoplastic steps are designed to be durable,slip-resistant, and jobsite-friendly—while staying cost-effective versus many fiberglass alternatives.
- One-piece thermoplastic design: built to resist common long-term issues like delamination, corrosion, and cracking.
- Slip-resistant tread pattern: safer entry/exit for kids, adults, and guests.
- Install-friendly details: features like pre-aligned gasket holes.
- Practical upside: lighter to handle on-site.
What’s typically included in the package

Exact contents vary by kit size and configuration. Always confirm by clicking the specific kit and reviewing the“Items Included in the Package” tab.
In general, a complete rectangle kit package is designed to cover:
- Structure: steel wall panels, bracing/support system, hardware, coping/liner track
- Interior finish: custom-made vinyl liner (pattern chosen by you)
- Circulation basics: skimmer, returns, and compliant main drains (where applicable)
- Equipment pad: pump + filter (and related equipment depending on package)
- Entry: the white thermoplastic step system (plus rails/ladder components depending on kit)
DIY vs hiring it out (the realistic approach)
Many homeowners either DIY the build, act as their own general contractor, or hire local trades for specific phases (excavation, concrete, electrical, plumbing). The “right” approach depends on your schedule, comfort level, and who you trust locally.
Pro tip
Even if you DIY, don’t DIY everything. Most successful projects split the work:excavation + concrete + electrical are commonly contracted out, while the rest can be done by a capable homeowner (with support).
Propools has been selling pool packages online for nearly 30 years and some time ago we stopped doing installation so we could better focus on the Do-It-Yourself process and best servicing those customers. Many of our customers ask if we have contractors who can do the installation process. We don't have specific contractors whom we recommend for In Ground Pool Installation. Installation of a swimming pool does not have to be done by a swimming pool company because it is a basic and straight forward construction process. No specialized skill sets are needed to complete the backyard transformation of a lifetime. If you are handy (or have people help that are) and can follow instructions, then this project is for you.
When any of our in ground pools are purchased, you will be contacted so we can start and continue a conversation through the entire installation process. You'll have full access to us, and we can communicate through a few different methods. You can reach us at the office or through email and you will also receive a direct phone number for technical contact should you not be able to reach us in the office.
If you do not feel you're up to this project, you should be able to find others to complete it for you. You've a few options. You can either function as a general contractor and hire sub-contractors to do the various tasks or you can hire one company and have them do all of it. Again, because the construction process is generic and straight forward; finding an installer should not be that difficult. Here are some types of companies to look at, though it is not a complete list.
- General Contractor companies
- People who do additions on homes
- Other pool companies
- Companies who install driveways
- Landscapers
- Local Handyman
- Etc.
Budget reality check (kit price is only part of the story)

Beyond the kit, you should budget for excavation, footer/collar concrete, plumbing runs, electrical, pool bottom material, and deck/landscaping.Your totals vary heavily by region, access to the backyard, soil conditions, and how much labor you handle yourself.

Plumbing: the simple mental model
Think of pool plumbing as two directions:water coming from the pool (skimmer + main drain) and water returning to the pool (returns + optional features).ProPools recommends using SCH-40 PVC for pool plumbing and fittings.
- From pool to equipment: skimmer line + main drain line
- From equipment back to pool: return lines (and optional lines for heater, cleaner, slide, sanitizer)

Build process (high-level checklist)
- Plan & permit: confirm setbacks, utilities, bonding requirements, and any local permits/inspections.
- Layout: stake the pool accurately and verify diagonals before digging.
- Excavate: dig to plan (including hopper profile if applicable) and manage spoil/haul-away.
- Footer/collar: pour the structural concrete support required for your wall system.
- Set walls & brace: assemble panels, square/plumb the structure, install coping/track.
- Rough plumbing: run skimmer/main drain/return lines to the equipment pad.
- Backfill & pool bottom: backfill as required; install Pool Krete or sand/cement base.
- Set step: install the step per manufacturer spec with proper bracing/support.
- Liner install: hang liner, vacuum set, and begin fill.
- Equipment startup: prime, balance, and verify flow; check for leaks and proper circulation.
- Deck & finish work: pour decking, add fencing, grade/landscape, and finalize electrical.

FAQs
Can I choose my own liner pattern?
Yes. ProPools does not standardize the liner pattern for these kits—customers choose the pattern to match their backyard aesthetic, and the liner is custom-made for the pool.
Can I customize the pool size or depth?
Often, yes. Many packages allow dimension changes in 1' increments and depth/profile customization. Use the product pages to pick your starting point, then contact ProPools to confirm what’s possible for your kit.
Do I need a pool builder to install this?
Not necessarily. Many homeowners DIY the entire project or hire specific trades for the technical phases. The best approach is the one that matches your skill set, schedule, and access to qualified local help.
What’s the #1 mistake that causes delays?
Underestimating access + excavation logistics (tight gates, slope, rock, groundwater, haul-away). Nail the plan before equipment arrives.
